If only there were a crystal ball. It would be so nice to know when the transportation funding issues will stabilize and we can all shift our focus from the question of where will we get our next project to how can we best DO the project? It's been a challenging time for many of us - engineering consultants, contractors and even the public sector employees. The good news is that some of our states are doing better than others, and some companies - believe it or not - are doing just fine thanks to well-planning stimulus money usage.

| | Annually business predictions are usually a set of figures. While it’s easy to guess at numbers, it can be a bit risky to someone’s reputation if the predictions aren’t very accurate. That’s not my concern since my predictions for the past few years have turned out reasonably accurate.
Recent economic figures for the construction industry have not been very encouraging during 2009, and by most accounts the outlook for 2010 isn’t any better. The residential market is less than 600,000 houses per year from a peak of more than 2.4 million in 2005. The large inventory of existing homes will dampen any demand for new construction until inventory is absorbed.
